My Interests (February 2012)

Since I haven’t posted anything in a little over a week, I figured I’d tell you guys what I’ve been up to in that time. Since my interests are constantly changing, I decided to post an update as to what I’m focused on going into February!

  • Finding a Job (still) — I’ve been up and down about finding a job lately, where I have had periods of applying to a lot of places everyday, and days/weeks were I don’t do much at all. I have been thinking it would be cool to work somewhere outside of Cincy;  I’ve started to look to see what kind of jobs are open elsewhere. Cleveland, Lexington, and NYC are three places I’m interested in.
  • 30 Rock — This show has been occupying a lot of my time recently, I started the first season about 10 days ago, and I’m almost caught up on season 6 (which is currently airing). I have a post halfway finished about 30 Rock and hopefully it’ll see the light of day… in the next day!
  • The Stock Market — While looking for a job, I have had this crazy idea that I don’t actually need a job because of the stock market. It’s been done before! I’ve steadily been learning about it for awhile now and I’ve been playing around with a little bit of money in a Scottrade account. Now I haven’t had any breakthroughs yet, but it’s definitively been an interest of mine since last fall. I watch my stocks daily and I’m thinking this could be a possible career down the line.
  • Netflix — We finally (as a family) got Netflix last week and I’ve been watching the hell out of it. It’s probably not the best thing for me to be doing all day, but it’s addicting! I don’t know how I’ve lived without it for so long. It’s been feeding my current 30 Rock addiction and I’m sure it will hook me on something else coming up… jerks… but not really… it rocks!
  • Graduate School — I’ve signed up to take the GRE at the end of the month in order to start applying to grad schools. I feel like Environmental Studies, Finance, and Computer Science are all possible fields that I’d like to study. I figure if I start applying to grad schools while looking for a job, I might come across what I really want to do!
  • tea (still) — Tea is great. It’s the best drink. I’m drinking Lipton mandarin orange green tea right now. I thought you might like to know =)

So this is pretty much what I’ve been up to the last week, while I haven’t been writing anything for this blog.

However, before I leave I can’t not mention Fantasy Basketball, it’s the best! But I haven’t been doing that great, I’m hanging in there though…

P.S. This is 50% for you, Ben.

Temple Run

This is the game I’ve been playing most lately and I’m pretty sure everyone plays it… or knows someone who does.

This game, from Imangi Studios (Harbor Master), is immensely popular and is taking over Iphones and Ipads everywhere. The game is simple, you swipe your finger in the direction you want your character to go (left=left, right=right, down=slide, up=jump). You start out by “grabbing” the idol (hitting start), you are then immedatly running for your life, as you attempt to outrun a pack of demon monkeys. Yes, they’re terrifying. It’s a very basic arcade game, try to run as far as you can and collect the most coins before you eventually die.

This game is taking over! I feel like everywhere I go, someone is playing it. Even my girlfriend is playing it, surprising right?! But yes, I do have a girlfriend. Anyways, it’s crazy because we all know girls do not play video games… The game is number one in the Apple app store and has been for a number of weeks. I believe it’s popular because it’s so simple, yet addicting; throw in the competitions between friends and no wonder everyone is playing it.

This game (I realized I’ve started the last two segments with “This game,” so why not go for the three-peat?!) is a very simple time-waster. I love those types of games when it comes to the Ipad/Iphone. The new, original arcade games are the ones which hold my attention the longest. Furthermore, seeing as how everyone plays this game, the competition to see who can get the highest score is addicting. I’ve posted a picture of my high score below… who can beat it?

My High Score

(Challenge Accepted)

For all of you with an Iphone, Ipad, or Touch, who do not have Temple Run, get it here.

Let’s say your job was to sit in front of the TV all day long, what shows would you watch? Well with my unemployment and my general lack of things to do, I feel as though that is exactly my job… and I’m here to tell you what shows I would watch. Now, I’m not actually going to do this, (actually it’s only 10am and so far I’m on track) at least I don’t think I will, but here’s what I would watch if I did:

Thursday, January 19th 2012

6:30-8:00 (ESPN)
SportsCenter/Breakfast – I always used to get up in the morning with SportCenter. It’s a great show to catch up on your sports and it’s a great show to have on in the background. As you will come to find out, I’ve scheduled my meals around SportsCenter. It’s practically on for 12 hours a day, and it comes at the perfect time for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Plus I’ll be up to date on all this super important sports news we all care about! Who needs CNN when you have ESPN?!

8:00-9:00 (Nickelodeon)
SpongeBob SquarePants – I know there are some SpongeBob fans out there. I’m a huge one, I’m 20 and I can still enjoy this show… come to think of it, I don’t know if that says more about SpongeBob or me. BUT, if you don’t like SpongeBob, I have a few choice of words for you, like you. and, are. and, A JERK!

9:00-10:00 (A&E)
The Sopranos – I love HBO shows, The Wire is the best tv drama ever. I hear great things about the Sopranos, yet I’ve never seen a full episode. I figure I have to watch an episode at some point in order to peak my interest! Now don’t get me wrong, when I watch shows I start from the beginning and watch them in their entirety, but one random episode won’t hurt right?! After all it is the Sopranos.

10:00-11:00 (USA)
Burn Notice – This show = not very good. However, this show (also) = awesome. Not all “not very good” shows are awesome though, it’s kinda like the squares/rectangles thing, if you know what I mean. This show is on USA and my rule of thumb for USA is that all it’s shows rock. These shows are pumped out like none other, even though they aren’t the best written, acted, produced, or edited. They are very, very entertaining! Plus on a side note, Clint Eastwood seems to like Jeffery Donovan, so why shouldn’t I!?

11:00-12:00 (Discovery)
How It’s Made/Nap Time – This Discovery show is kinda interesting, yet really boring. It shows you how things like grapples, dog sleds,  and retractable cords are made… like, in factories. I mean, yeah, it’s cool to have these random pieces of knowledge; maybe I can throw them in a friend’s face someday, “actually, no one makes dog sleds like that anymore, Steve.” But I’m gonna go on record saying, “I’ve had one of the best naps ever after I turned on this show.”

12:00-1:00 (Cartoon Network)
Looney Toons – Back to the cartoons! I watched Looney Tones all the time when I was a kid, my dad would tape them for us on VHS so we could watch them ANYTIME! It was great. Cartoon Network recently brought back an hour block of Looney Toons and it’s great. I can reminisce while I cheer on Wile E. Coyote to catch that darn RoadRunner.

1:00-2:00 (ESPN)
SportsCenter/Lunch – As I said before, SportsCenter is a great background show, it’s great to schedule meals around, and I can see if any sweet sports trades are happening!

2:00-3:00 (Comedy Central)
Scrubs – My favorite sitcom of the last 10 years. I have every season on DVD (besides the last “fake” one) and I can watch it at anytime. If you don’t watch Scrubs, you should start. It’s funny, even though I love Scrubs so much, I can’t think of much else to say. Maybe I will write an article about why it’s so great one day!

3:00-4:00 (MTV)
Jersey Shore – There was, like, nothing else on… and doesn’t everyone kinda like it…?

4:00-5:00 (TBS)
Friends – I’ve been on a big Friends kick recently, I’m not quite sure why, I’ve never loved Friends, but I’ve seen a lot of episodes. It’s a sitcom that has its moments and it’s pretty good show to kick back and watch. Friends was the Jersey Shore of 7 years ago! Except for not really at all…

5:00-5:30 (Comedy Central)
Always Sunny – I’d say Sunny has consistently been the funniest show on TV for the last 5 years. I know it’s grown in popularity quite a bit the past couple of seasons, but you cannot truly appreciate it unless you’ve seen it all. A lot of shows lose steam around the 5 or 6 season, but I have to say Sunny hasn’t let me down at all. They’ve been in prime form and I jump to watching reruns at any chance I get.

5:30-6:00 (Comedy Central)
South Park – This is without a doubt the funniest animated show ever. Parker and Stone have such a great vision and their social commentary is unmatched. It makes you think, while being straight up hilarious. A lot of people haven’t continued to watch it, but I have to say it’s still amazing.

6:00-7:00 (ESPN)
SportsCenter/Dinner – Dinner Time! I think there might be some different viewpoints about the same things they’ve talk about all day… I’m excited!

7:00-8:00 (TBS)
Seinfeld – “The Barber” and “The Movie” those are the two on tonight. Seinfeld is the best sitcom ever (sorry Arrested, you’re a close second). It may even be the best show of all time. Watch it at every chance you get!

NBC Lineup (30 Rock, Parks, The Office, Up All Night) – NBC has the best Thursday night lineup of any station, in my opinion, they have the best weekday lineup of any network. Let’s break it down. Now I used to be able to talk about how Community was the best written, most poignant sitcom on TV, but sadly it’s not “on TV” anymore. Oh well.

I have to admit, I’ve not seen 30 Rock from the beginning, I’ve actually only seen a handful of episodes. However, it’s great, there’s a very talented cast and watching it from season 1 is on my to do list.

I cannot say enough about Parks and Recreation, because no one does. It’s great. It’s my favorite show on TV. No one gives it the credit it’s due. It’s by far the most talented cast on TV and I laugh more watching that show than any other. The key is to get to know the characters, they all fit in perfectly together and are all hilarious. Please watch this show and talk to me about how great it is. I want someone to make fun of Jerry with.

The Office is still going, I have to admit, it’s not as bad as I thought it would be. However, Michael Scott was far and away the best part of the show and I don’t think Andy was the right choice for boss. Ed Helms got the position because of the Hangover and his popularity. I’m still watching in enjoyment, but I’m waiting for it to end.

Up All Night is supposedly pretty dang good, I’ve not watched it, but once again it’s on my to-do list. I hope they cancel Whitney. I’m disappointed they cancelled Outsourced. Perfect Couples seemed to have came as soon as it went. Hopefully, Up All Night is indeed a good show, so it can hold down this, dreaded 4th spot.

So there you go, a whole day watching TV. Even though I didn’t actually do it, I might very well one day. So read and take notes, if you’re ever stuck in this horrible position, were you have to watch TV ALL day, you’ll know exactly what to do!

Top 7 Players in the NBA

After watching Ric Bucher make a mockery of himself by picking his top 7 players in the NBA, I had to make a list of my own.  Here’s Bucher’s list:

  1. Kobe Bryant
  2. Derrick Rose
  3. Lebron James
  4. Dwight Howard
  5. Dwayne Wade
  6. Dirk Nowitzki
  7. Russell Westbrook

Now, I’ve never run into Bucher on TV before and I hope I don’t ever again. This list is just shameful, and I have a feeling he doesn’t actually watch the NBA. First off, to point out the obvious, the thing that everyone is talking about, he included Westbrook OVER DURANT.

“Russell Westbrook does more of those things and is better at his position than Kevin Durant and that’s just a fact”

He’s some facts for you Bucher:

  • Westbrook had a game this year were he was 0-13 from the field with as many turnovers as points (4).
  • Durant has Westbrook beat in fg%, ft%, 3 pointers per game, rebounds, blocks, and points… perennially.
  • Durant is arguably the best scorer in the NBA, along the likes of Kobe and Carmelo.
  • Westbrook is not a top 10 player.

There are two other gripes I have with Bucher and his list.

  1. LeBron isn’t number one.
  2. He wanted to put Rose as number one.

LEBRON JAMES IS THE BEST BASKETBALL PLAYER IN THE WORLD. He just is. He is an absolute monster. This year he’s averaging 29 ppg, 7.5 apg, and 8.5 rpg, not to mention the fact that he’s shooting .570 from the field. This is the closest I’ve seen anyone to averaging a Triple-Double in awhile, and James just gets better and better each year. There is no current player better than James, the only thing he doesn’t have is Championships, but they will come.

Derrick Rose is good, he’s great, he’ll continue to be great and could easily be top 3 down the road, but he’s not number one. He’s not nearly as proven as every other player on the list, he’s had one great year, last year. Before that- he was good, but in order to be that high on the list (number one as Bucher wanted to put him) you have to prove yourself, year in and year out. Which Rose will no doubt prove himself, but in time. Yes, he did win MVP last year, but most of us forget what that means. Most Valuable Player, the one who helps their team out the most, the Bulls are nothing without him. Steve Nash has won MVP two, almost three times, where is he in the conversation?

Now that I’m done talking about this idiot Bucher, who gives me the confidence to know that I’ll have a job at ESPN tomorrow, it’s time for my top 7.

    1. LeBron James – His stats prove it, watching him proves it, now all he needs to do is win Championships.
    2. Kobe Bryant – He’s got the rings, he can score. This year he’s averaging over 5 rebounds and 5 assists per game (a career high). I don’t like him, but he’s damn good.
    3. Dwayne Wade – He won a championship, only with help from an aging Shaq. He takes over games.
    4. Kevin Durant – He can shoot better than anyone. He’s arguably the best scorer, and he’s getting better each year.
    5. Dirk Nowitzki – He’s been around forever, showed us how Europeans can ball. Finally won a championship last year, when he DOMINATED games… in the clutch.
    6. Dwight Howard – One of the last true (classic) Centers around. The Magic built a perennial playoff team around him. He can rebound and block shots better than anyone.
    7. Derrick Rose – He stepped his game up immensely last year and was the youngest player to win MVP in NBA history. Need I say more?
Rounding out the top ten, I have Paul, Anthony and Love. Love is a gutsy pick, but what can I say… I LOVE LOVE.

My Interests

Let me start off by telling you guys that I’ve been teaching myself HTML recently with the help of W3Schools. Therefore, I’m attempting to write this post in HTML. I’m gonna implement various aspects of it so hopefully it looks sweet!

As my first post stated I’m interested in various things at the moment, they are as followed:

  • HTML
  • Sherlock Holmes
  • Fantasy Basketball
  • The Frozen Planet
  • Blogging
  • Finding a Job
  • Skyrim
  • Tea

I’ve discussed HTML already, I’m currently blogging, and finding a job is lame (just kidding, dad!), so I’ve crossed those off the list!

Now it’s on to the fun things that I will (briefly) discuss.

Sherlock Holmes

After seeing Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, I remembered how much I love Sherlock Holmes. This awesome movie with a rather mediocre ending, led me to further my knowledge of the greatest detective ever. I decided to start the journey with BBC’s (2010) Sherlock. It stars a guy I don’t know as Holmes and the new Bilbo Baggins as Watson. It is excellent. 2 seasons, three 90 minute episodes per, and it’s Holmes in the modern world. After season 1, I decided I should ask Sir Arthur Conan Doyale for more help. He told me to download The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes on iBooks, I couldn’t tell him no. I’m currently reading more about Sherlock!

Check out this trailer for Sherlock if I got your attention.

Fantasy Basketball

This is my second year  playing and managing a Fantasy Basketball league on ESPN. I first got into fantasy sports last year with baseball, continued on into football, and followed through with basketball. Seeing as how it’s NBA season, fantasy basketball is on my mind. We are playing in a keeper league and decided to keep 2 players from the previous year. I choose Amare Stoudemire and Deron Williams. I’m telling you this for two reasons.

  1. I want to.
  2. I want to talk a little about Deron Williams

I am trying to get rid of him! His fg% is miserable, his points are down, I have enough assists with Calderon, Nash, and Rubio, and I want to get someone good for him. I’m thinking Ellis (who I had last year and choose not to keep), Love, Anthony,  or Wade. Anyways, I love fantasy sports, you can ask almost anyone… I’m obsessed!

If you want to check out my league, don’t hesitate check it out here.

My team name is Smooth as Cobalt, btw.

The Frozen Planet

I am a big fan of BBC nature series, especially those presented by David Attenborough. I don’t want any sissy American celebrities narrating my Planet Earth-type shows. No thanks, Oprah and Sigourney Weaver, I want a true hero, and that man is David Attenborough. For awhile now, BBC has produced series such as The Blue Planet:Seas of Life, Planet Earth, Life and now The Frozen Planet. This new series focuses on the atmosphere and life, both in the Arctic and Antarctic. With episodes that chronicle each season, as well as ones devoted to human life surrounding the poles, this series is promising. It will certainly live up to the previous standards set by BBC nature shows. I’m currently learning about summer and the melting of sea ice and David Attenborough has yet to let me down.

For more information check it out on BBC ONE:

The Best Game Ever Made

I’ve logged over 50 75 100 150 hours. I have THREE characters over level 35. It’s the best game ever…I’ll be right ba…

I’ve been drinking tea a lot lately. I’ve never been much of a coffee guy, I need caffeine to wake up, and tea just tastes good. Either that or I’m watching way to many British shows. Here’s a table of when I drink what teas:

Breakfast Lunch Dinner Bedtime
Irish Breakfast Tea Arizona Green Tea Hot Green Tean Sleepytime Tea

For more information on tea, please visit tea.

I’d love some questions/comments/advice. Tell me how sweet or lame I am. BTW, that HTML title was on purpose.

Also, I’m a notoriously mediocre writer. My proofreading and grammar is crap sometimes okay, most of the time!

Don’t hold it against me!

I’m Cal Webb, Nice to Meet You.

I’d like to start out by telling you guys some things I’m focused on at the moment.

  • Sherlock Holmes
  • Learning HTML
  • Skyrim
  • Fantasy Basketball
  • The Frozen Planet (BBC Series)
  • Blogging
  • Finding a Job
  • tea

As of now that’s all I can think of, however, this list changes quite constantly and I’m sure the things I blog about will reflect it. In the next couple days, I will try to touch on the list above, and hopefully I’m not the only interested! More to come.

P.S. What’s best!?
